Don Tyson owes every breath he has taken in the last two years to someone he doesn’t even know, and he’s forever grateful for their selfless act of becoming an organ donor.

Six years ago, the active Spruce Grove resident couldn’t walk from his garage to his house without becoming short of breath.

A lung transplant changed all that, and Tyson is now back to his routine of golfing, running, biking, swimming and playing with his grandchildren.

“It’s a brand new life,” he said.

Tyson’s Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) led to his need for a lung transplant.

It was manageable for him until February 2010 when he began experiencing difficulty breathing. He went to the hospital and came home with an oxygen tank.

Two viruses had attacked his lungs, which were already affected by COPD.

His health slowly deteriorated, and the following year he had to quit working. Continue reading
