The University of Alabama at Birmingham last month performed the region's first HIV-positive kidney transplant.
The patient is the eighth in the nation to receive an organ from an HIV-positive deceased donor, UAB says.
UAB is one of just 13 transplant centers in the U.S. approved for HIV-positive to HIV-positive transplants following the passage of the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act, or Hope Act. Signed into law in 2013 by President Barack Obama, the Hope Act revised a 1988 law prohibiting HIV-positive organ donors.
