4 Months After a Liver Transplant - Rare Disease Athlete Back on the Volleyball Court

Savannah Rennie thought she might never be able to play on a collegiate volleyball team again. The 19-year-old freshman from University of California was diagnosed with the rare disease congenital hepatic fibrosis with portal hypertension in June of 2015 and many thought that was the end of her career.

Thanks to a successful liver transplant, and a fearce determination, she is back on the court and looking forward to this weekend’s matches against Utah (Friday) and Colorado (Sunday). 

What’s the diagnosis?

In early June of 2015 Savannah came home from a night of playing volleyball with a bad headache and some nausea. She eventually developed a 103-degree fever that rose to 105 by the next day. With abdominal pain and no appetite, she made multiple trips to urgent care before being admitted to the hospital for 8 days.

Twelve doctors including a liver specialist administered test after test as Rennie's liver rapidly expanded in size, but none could come to a diagnosis.
