Bogota, Dec 18 (EFE).- The Colombian Congress Thursday approved a law that makes organ donation mandatory provided the deceased is an adult and he had not expressed his reservations against it during his lifetime.

"A person has his entire life to say that he does not want to be a donor," Radical Change party legislator Rodrigo Lara, who introduced the bill, told reporters after it secured the Senate's approval.

In case of minors, the parents will have the authority to decide if their organs will be donated after their death.

The bill also makes it clear Colombians will be given priority when it comes to recipients of the organs.

It is estimated just a single donor can save between seven and ten lives and benefit a total of 55 people.

However, the two houses of the Congress differ on certain aspects of the bill and must find a common ground for the law to be sent for presidential approval and come into effect. Continue reading
