Goddard, Kansas - A beating heart and a Christmas homecoming, two gifts one Goddard family said it couldn't be more thankful for. In a matter of months, Goddard High School senior and baseball player Josh Oakley went from playing summer baseball, to being airlifted to a Kansas City hospital in need of a new heart.
"Going from the summer when I was playing baseball every weekend and working outside all week to not being able to move outside of a bed for weeks upon weeks was just really crazy," said Josh.
Since March of 2015 Josh had not been feeling well, complaining of fatigue and a cough. It wasn't until August doctors did a chest x-ray and found Josh's heart was twice the size it should be. He was airlifted to Children's Mercy hospital in Kansas City.
"It felt like it dramatically changed really fast from being bearable to I couldn't even hardly function," he remembered.
"It didn't take them very long to say we have a 17-year-old that a needs a hearth transplant because his is just not going to work," said Josh's mother, DeVona Oakley. Continue reading
