SHIPPENSBURG - In the four years since he received a lifesaving liver transplant, Shippensburg University’s Wes Mallicone has become a passionate advocate for organ and tissue donation.
He speaks to community groups about the need for donations and to families of donors about the priceless gift their loved ones provided to others like him.
Next month, Mallicone will help share the importance of organ donation with a national audience. He was chosen to be one of 24 transplant recipients on the Donate Life America float in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 1.
Mallicone will represent the Gift of Life Donor Program, which has coordinated nearly 40,000 organ transplants - including his - and more than 550,000 tissue transplants in eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and southern New Jersey since 1974.
Mallicone is director of sports medicine at SU, leading a department that serves the health care needs of nearly 600 student-athletes on 20 NCAA Division II intercollegiate teams and the university’s cheerleading squad. Continue reading
