Omaha, Neb, 59-year-old Brian Vincent is going home with a new heart.

Vincent was Nebraska Medicine's 40th heart transplant so far this year. While the hospital celebrates its record-breaking milestone, Vincent is celebrating his second chance at life.

The Des Moines man is used to seeing patient monitors and IV drips.

"I don't know how many times they said, 'he's not gonna make it,'" Vincent said.

In April of 2015, Vincent suffered what's known as a widow-maker heart attack-- the worst kind you can get, and one not many survive.

"I said, 'you can't let him die,'" Vincent's wife Brenda recalled. "It's still emotional."

After spending about a month at Nebraska Medicine, Vincent was sent back home to Iowa with a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) to help his heart pump after half of it died. Continue reading
